Bandung Authentic Local Foods



Located in West Java, Indonesia, the lovely city of Bandung is not only known for its pleasant climate but for its culinary delights as well. It seems that talking about culinary in Bandung will never be enough, is it right? I am the one who excited to tried foods in Bandung. Before visiting bandung, i deliberately searched many reviews of street food, cafes til restaurant, So many bucket list that i have but i just tried a little bit. We know that visitors travel to this city in large numbers on weekends, from all corners of the country simply to relish the delicious street food, cafes and restaurants. So here we are ! For some people, going to taste the culinary delights of the street food in Bandung is just a hobby that’ll increase their experience of having enjoyable time there.  

Here is a list of local authentic foods that i tried while in this city. 

1. Batagor Kingsley 👍


Batagor is eaten all over Indonesia although it is said to have originated in West Java and is one of Bandung’s specialities. The name comes from an abbreviation of the ingredients used in the dish, bakso tahu goreng, or fried meatballs and tofu. The dish is usually eaten as a snack rather than a full meal and is served with fried fish balls that are usually encased in a crispy batter or are stuffed inside the chunks of tofu for which this dish is famous.

Established in 1982, Batagor Kingsley is without a doubt one of the most-loved batagor joints in town. It’s not uncommon to come across a mob of customers overcrowding the shop, especially during weekends when swarms of Jakartans descend upon the City of Flowers. Found on Jalan Veteran, what was once a small eatery has transformed into a modern double-storey building. The location is close to our hotel, so this is the food that we tried first when we came to Bandung.


There are two types of batagor that one can choose from here: batagor soup and fried batagor. The former is served whole in a bowl of chicken broth, whereas the latter comes in small pieces and is topped with peanut sauce. The peanut sauce itself is a tad salty and peppery, with traces of sweetness that appears from the use of palm sugar and soy sauce.

When it comes both the tofu and the fishcake, both versions share a slightly similar taste and texture because they are initially prepared using the same method – the fishcake dough being stuffed inside the tofu before frying. What sets them apart is simply how they are plated up. Overall, the tofu possesses a tender and milky texture, while the fishcake filling is chewy and moist. 

Batagor Kingsley also offers a selection of snacks, crackers and ice creams, but the one that takes the cake is its siomay (steamed fish dumplings), which is a must-try if you’re there. we also bought sarsaparilla, nasi bistik and es cendol durian. 

There're also other famous Batagor outlets in Bandung which you can find easily. Currently batagor is becoming one of the typical Bandung cuisine that is usually selected and seen by visitors and tourist.

2. Armor Kopi Leuit 👍

 
A short walk from the entrance of the Djuanda Forest Park, Armor Kopi Leuit harnesses the air and atmosphere from the surrounding mountains and forests to provide a more traditional Indonesian coffee experience. The coffee itself is brewed in very contemporary methods. Which is to say, Hand Brews, Cold Brews, V60, Vietnamese Drips, Arabicas, Robustas, Liberica beans, and the like, which you can pair with an array of Indonesian snacks – think fried corn fritters, cireng (a tapioca flour wrap filled with fermented soybeans and mashed beans), and other deep-fried and salty bites that the locals love so much. We ordered cireng, hot milk tea (but not hot), oolong tea and green tea.We like cireng taste which is so simple, chewy but delish.


A rather unique quirk of Armor Kopi Leuit is the ordering procedure. After you make your order at the coffee bar, you take a cross-legged seat in a pagoda or on one of the many logs and when your drinks and snacks arrive, the waiters will come out screaming your name in order to find you. Rather than taking anything away from the gentle atmosphere, it seems to just add a little bit of Indonesian idiosyncrasy.

3. One Eighty Coffee and Music



If you guys are looking for famous hangout spot in Bandung with unique ambiance, One Eighty Coffee & Music cafe might be the one. The cafe has a very unique concept where they combine vertical garden, lush green trees and pool inside the cafe.  Customers can sit and enjoy their time at the cafe while dipping their feet into the pool, don’t worry the pool is shallow. The cafe concept is unique and definitely super instagenic, but I’m personally not a fan of the idea of dipping my feet in the same pool with lots of strangers’ feet though so we chose to sit at the normal table, on the second floor there’s stage for live music. One Eighty offers a unique and different concept of cafe interior, we can see why this place instantly become one of the hippest spots in town.


One Eighty serve wide variety of food from pasta, pizza, salad, sandwich, steak, all day brunch, etc from early morning until late night. But we just ordered drink, because our stomatch still feels full of bakmi. We tried recommended drinks, hazelnut chocolate and green tea latte. Overall, i think our drinks was good, i like the taste of hazelnut chocolate and green tea latte.

Ok! i’ll give you some opinion before you come here, if you decided to try the pool, you don’t need to wear shoes and long trousers. Just wear slippers, as there are no lockers to put your shoes. You just put your foot wear beside the pool. Then be very careful with your belongings, especially you gadget. You don’t want to let it fall.

As One Eighty Coffee is getting popular, so it’s sometimes hard to get a parking space, as it is limited.

4. Roti Bakar Gang Kote "234" 👍


One more highly recommended culinary in bandung namely “Roti 234 Gang Kote”. Toasted bread is a snack that is easily found in various parts of Indonesia. In Bandung, this one culinary is one of the favorite night snacks. There are many delicious bakery in Bandung. But not complete without visiting Gang Kote. Gang Kote is Located at Jalan Jendral Sudirman Bandung. Every afternoon to night, the alley is always crowded with culinary hunters. Understandably, because there is  a place where the bakers are famous in Bandung. His name is Roti Bakar 234 or the local people call it Roti Bakar Gang Kote. This toast business has actually been initiated since 1958. Around the 1980s it was very popular with the name Roti Bakar  555 and is usually in the town square. But now changed to Roti Bakar 234 According to the Brand of Bread used. This type of bread is old, visible from a solid texture, not too soft, but not too hard or rude. Today’s toast is usually cooked by placing it on a hot skillet that has been given butter. The heat of course comes from the stove so the process is quite fast. Different things were shown Roti Bakar Gang Kote. They still maintain the traditional way as used by the pioneer, namely by burning bread on charcoal coals. As is well known that charcoal often gives an extra flavor to a dish, as well as Roti Bakar 234. The texture becomes more crisp on the outside, but melted inside, and the aroma is really appetizing.You should try ! We ordered Roti Bakar with Milk Cheese, Chocolate Meses and Corned-Beef topping. Unfortunately, we didn't get a corned beef topping.

5. Nasi Kuning Pasir Koja


Established in 1970, nasi kuning pasir koja is one of the favorite culinary night-spots in the city. This traditional Indonesian dish consists of rice cooked in coconut milk that is usually seasoned with turmeric, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. Nasi kuning is always served neatly organized on the plate, and the rice should always be placed in the middle. It is traditionally associated with the island of Java, which is considered to be the place of origin of this authentic Indonesian dish. This food is quite simple.

There are only abon, semur daging (sweet rendang), oncom, and kerupuk. The texture of nasi kuning is lil bit dry, semur daging is lil bit sweet (I love spicy and salty food, so i think i am not interest at all with this food). Nasi Kuning Pasir Koja is quite special, since it uses oseng oncom as a substitute for regular seasonings. Usually, many sellers use oreg tempe. For those who like oncom, they certainly like this one. All the side dishes are unique. They also served semur jengkol, tahu kuah, telur and tempe. I should pay 20k for this food, lil bit pricey for Nasi Kuning and Semur Daging only. We ordered this food by gofood after thingking a long long long time! (We really tired after visit around 3 big mall in Bandung PVJ, Ciwalk, and Paskal 23 -- Ampun deh kaki berasa mau copot beneran !!) Actually, our plan was to go to 23 Pascal Food Market but we got lost, so we decided to go home and buy food by gofood app.

6. Bubur Ayam Veteran 👍



Bubur ayam is the one of my favourite food on breakfast. Savory and cheap perfectly describe Bubur Ayam near my hotel (I dont know what the name is). The steaming hot chicke porridge is served with generous portion of shredded chicken topping. You can also need extra topping such as crackers, eggs, skewerd chicken liver and gizzard. Actually i wanna try famous porridge in Bandung, but i dont have much time. So, i tried this bubur Ayam, Apparently the taste didn't make me disappointed. The price is around Rp 15000 per portion. I'll give you recommendation of bubur ayam in Bandung, you can try Bubur Ayam Mang Haji Oyo Tea dan Bubur Ayam Gibbas. (I don't know how it taste but most local people like it).

7. Martabak Nikmat Andir

Martabak Nikmat Andir located at Jalan Jend. Sudirman, Bandung. This is one of the favorite culinary spots in Bandung. You can easily found Martabak Andir with looking for their signage and it’s always packed with people. Martabak is Indonesian style sweet pancake with various filling just like cheese, peanut, chocolate. But nowadays Martabak itself has been evolving into the next level, first with new unique filling such as Nutella, Ovomaltine, etc then the batter itself now also available in innovative flavorings such as green tea, pandan, red velvet, taro, and black forest. Here at Martabak Andir you can find various unique Martabak batter such as red for Red Velvet, purple for Taro, green for Green Tea / Pandan, and black for the Black Forest. Besides the regular Martabak, you can also order Tipker / Tipis Kering, the thin crunchy version.



We bought most favorite martabak Pandan Jagung Keju. Green martabak batter with pandan extract and yellow juicy canned corn mixed into the batter then topped with grated cheese and condensed milk. The pandan flavoring was super fragrant and it tasted even better when the sweetness and juiciness from corn burst into our mouth, Aaahhhh heaven!! 

Overall, we agree that Martabak Andir was definitely the best and tastiest martabak in Bandung. The soft batter, the fragrant, and the fillings are totally perfect! Especially their Pandan batter with corn filling which you’ll hardly find anywhere else. We also love the fact that they use butter instead of margarine and also they don’t add any additional sugar into the batter that’s why it tasted buttery and not as sweet as the usual martabak we had.

8. Nasi Bistik Astana Anyar


Dont let it fool you, Nasi Bistik Astana Anyar does not use beef at all. The meet-west fushion uses sliced fried chicken steak as the main ingredient. But don’t expect a fancy steakhouse, as the humble, unpretentious street food setting gives you an authentic Indonesian dining experience. Fried chicken steak served with fried rice, steamed vegetables, fried potato wedge and sweet chilli sauce. They will provide you seats on the road side (It was raining when i arrived so i decided to eat at hotel). The seller will only open at night, you can call them 15 minutes in advanced to make preorder your food, or you’ll have to queue for at least 30 minutes. But if you don't like chicken you can also try other menu such as Mushroom rice and Capcay. Overall the taste is quite simple, Honestly i like fried rice with soy sauce but i think fried rice and chicken steak are not bad, i just like the taste of sauce, but the consistency of sauce looks like soup (So, i dont know what should i called it ? Sauce or Soup). The price is around Rp 20000 per portion. (PS : Don't mix your sauce with the rice or chicken stick).

9. Siomay Rumah Mode





Siomay is a food that must be tasted by tourists when visiting Bandung. Actually, this is an unxpected event, we planned to go around Bandung after looking for some souvenirs in Rumah Mode and Hwaaalaaa we get caught in the rain almost 2 hours. We straving so we decided to buy a some dish to brunch, Yes ! siomay. The location is right in the middle in front of the entrance to Store Shoes and Bags. Siomay served with steamed potatoes and peanut sauce. The taste was good, but the potatoes too overcooked so it can damage the taste overall. The price maybe lil bit pricey. The place was pretty, comfortable and relaxing ambience. The outdoor mall concept leveraged on Bandung's cool highland climate. The buildings are single storey, which accentuate the trees and greenery dotting the mall. Floor tiles are immaculately designed, with motifs of the nature complementing the surrounding greens.

10. Cireng Cipaganti

If you’re just feeling a little peckish, you may want to try cireng cipaganti. Cireng Cipaganti is one of the MOST famous cireng stall that has been selling in Cipaganti main street since 2004 (although they have relocated 2-3 times). The bite size snack is made of fried tapioca mixed with starch and covered with peanut sauce. It has a savory taste, chewy texture and best served while it’s still hot. To enrich the flavor, Cireng Cipaganti comes with minced beef, sausage, beef floss (Abon), or cheese filling. They also have 'Cilok'. Cilok (aci dicolok), uses the same main ingredient: tapioca starch, molded and shaped like a cherry-tomato sized with minced beef filling, then steamed and ready to be eaten with spicy ground peanut sauce.

recommend you to buy raw Cireng and cooked yourself than eat on place. (Ask for freshly fried cireng, coz the cold cireng is very chewy).

11. Bakmi Apin 👍


This time, I wanna going to talk about one of legendary noodle in Bandung, Bakmi Apin at Jalan Sukajadi. We went to Bakmi Apin for saturday dine, and we can easily spot the location by their signage. The place is quite spacious with sufficient parking capacity. The kitchen is open and located on the left side of the entrance. You can see the crew who prepare the noodles and throw it high into the air (I think up to 1 meter high) before he put the noodle into a bowl. Wow!

 
One of the things that make Bakmi Apin different from other noodle restaurants is the dried shredded chicken on top of the noodle. The texture of the chicken is just like “abon“. Their signature is Yamien, which available in two options, Asin (salty) and Manis (sweet).
We ordered Hot Me Pangsit (Me) and Yamien Manis (My Friend) to dine in. If you like spicy food, you can try the Hot Mie. I think it's not spicy at all.  

We do love the taste of their Yamien, it’s really good. The dried shredded chicken on top of the noodle is really unique, but we still prefer to ordinary chicken chunks. Besides noodle, they also have any kinds of pangsit (dumpling), baso (meatball), tahu (tofu), and Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng, Sop Buntut, Nasi Timbel, etc. and many kinds of snacks. Overall, everything that we tried was pretty tasty and yummy.

12. Brownies and Pisang Bolen Kartika Sari 👍

Brownies may not immediately sound like a quintessential Indonesian dish but if you are looking for dessert in Bandung then these are not to be missed. The brownies here are steamed rather than baked which means they are incredibly soft and fluffy with a deep hit of cocoa that makes them rich and incredibly moreish. The most famous spot to buy brownies in the city is Amanda Brownies so make sure to come and pick up a box before you leave.

Actually, Their flagship product is Pisang Bollen Keju Spesial & other options in the same range. However the one appreciated most back home is Brownies Panggang – Original which also comes in close to 15 different varieties & toppings. They normally have expiry date at least one week later after the manufacturing & can be stored in a refrigerator a bit longer. Just microwave the portion to be served for few seconds & it tastes as if like a freshly made. Few may find it a little sweeter though.

Other than above you will find at the main store bread, cakes, chips & nuts, dried banana, cookies, hampers, lapis, puff pastry, imported chocolates as much as you would like to carry.
The prices are quiet expensive. So, if you wanna shop souvenirs at this place, Pay attention to expiry dates and price on products.
